Live
I found two nice and very affordable Airbnbs in Calgary – one near 17 Ave, and one in Sunnyside. I ran it by a local, who said I couldn’t go wrong with either. 17 Ave is south of downtown, and Sunnyside, north, across Bow River. Both are central, but I went with the former because of its abundance of restaurants and coffee shops. Had it not been winter, I would have went with the latter for its proximity to parks and the water. Get $40 off your first Airbnb stay here.
Transport
Calgary’s C Train is free within downtown – which I found insane, amazing, and unheard of. By chance I happened to stay walking distance to the last stop on one end of this “7th Avenue Free Fare Zone”, Downtown West/Kerby. The last stop on the other end is City Hall. Though Calgary is known for is harsh winters, so I found the open-air train stations unpractical and bizarre. (See cover photo)
Fitness
I was recovering from a sprained foot while in Calgary, so I did not exercise at all, but saw that you can get three free visits at GoodLife Fitness.
Work
I’m typically not a fan of chains, but I really liked working from the Second Cup on 4th and 17th Ave. It doesn’t look like your typical Second Cup at all – it’s large and spacious with high ceilings and comfortable chairs.
I found the Phil & Sebastian in the hip Misison neighbourhood a bit loud and not as conducive, but they have other locations you can check out, as well as events.
I didn’t get to check out the ATB Entrepreneur Centre on 17th Ave, but it looked like they have a (perhaps unofficial) co-working space, as well as events.
Experience
Eat/Drink
Alforno Bakery & Cafe was mentioned in two free guidebooks I picked up – Calgary visitor guide as well as where.ca. It’s a bright and beautiful spot right by the Bow River and Peace Bridge in downtown Calgary. I had a cappuccino and a cheesecake, but they have full meals as well.
One of these guides also recommended Buttermilk Fine Waffles. I had the seasonal Earl Grey with Blackberries, and it was divine. Beautiful place too, right by the Second Cup mentioned above.
See/Do
Prince’s Island Park and Eau Claire Park
